Winter tyres offer huge safety benefits against regular tyres in adverse weather conditions. On snow, regular tyres take, on average, more than twice the distance to stop compared to winter tyres. When braking on ice, from 12 mph, the average stopping distance for winter tyres was 12.5 metres against 19 meres for regular tyres.

Winter tyres are specifically designed to give extra grip in colder temperatures, especially below 7°C on snow and ice. The key to the improved grip performance on wet, ice, snow-covered surfaces is the use of “sipes”. Sipes provide hundreds of small additional edges which enable the tyre to grip the road as the tyre rotates. In addition these enable localised movement of the rubber as the compound clings / grips to the road.

Winter tyres are also designed to gather the snow and fill the tread grooves and sipes, which helps to grip on loose snow. As snow clings to snow a snow covering on the tyre actually helps to aid the grip. On wet surfaces, the snow tyre also aids a safer drive as the deep grooves help to disperse water and increases resistance, reducing the risk of aquaplaning, since there won’t be a pool of water under the tyre.
